DS Game and Watch Collection CaseClub Nintendo Japan has got more items to keep the Nintendo fanboys back in the States drooling. Chief among them is an exclusive title, Game and Watch Collection for the DS, which features ports of many of the old-school Game and Watch games, including Donkey Kong. Another great-looking item is a DS game case, roughly the size of a CD case, that has room for 9 DS cartridges and includes 7 different DS lite styluses in a variety of colors (one for each day of the week?)

We can only hope that one day Nintendo will realize its folly and create something similar to Club Nintendo for the USA. For now, you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled for eBay auctions of what are sure to become some highly sought-after items.

Miyamoto-sanShigeru Miyamoto talked about the Nintendo Wii with Famitsu magazine, and IGN has a summary and translation of some of his comments. The main thing that IGN picked up on was that the number of buttons on the Wii controller might not be finalized, with Miyamoto reportedly saying, “We’re still debating on the area of how many buttons to use.” This might have been misread in context, however, and may have just been talking generally about the development process for the Wii. He also talked some about the goals for the new console; he wants it to be technology “that you’ll want to turn on every day…like a television.” Certainly, with the DS, Nintendo has been successful at picking up the more casual gamers, but Miyamoto hopes to capture this feeling with the Wii as well. Most telling was Miyamoto’s comments after hearing about the results of the Famitsu game console poll, and is really an indication of how in-grained their “blue ocean” strategy of going after typically non-gamer oriented markets is. Miyamoto’s response, “Was there a selection for ‘I don’t want any of them’? I’d like to know this, because we’re fighting this ‘I don’t want any of them’ selection” really shows the dedication that Nintendo is pushing towards the non-gamer, or perhaps the gamer that has gotten tired of the direction the industry is heading.

Nacho LibreFear not luchadors, Nacho Libre is coming to the Nintendo DS game system.  The game is based on Nacho Libre which features Jack Black and opens on June 16th.  The game will be the first wrestling game on the Nintendo DS in the US.

Players can play as Nacho or more than 10 other luchadors, all with their own unique abilities. The game also features a range of over-the-top wrestling attacks, four play modes, themed Touch Screen mini-games, 4 player wireless matches and numerous arenas from the movie in which players can battle to be the ultimate Luchador.

Nacho Libre was developed by Budcat Creations, who have previously worked on Madden 06 for the PC and Psychonauts for the Playstation 2.

Pirated DS Cartridges

It appears that the first pirated DS games are beginning to make their way overseas, so eBayers beware! GBA carts could often be difficult to pick out (sometimes the only way to tell was by looking inside the cart above the metal contacts), but for now it appears that the pirated DS carts are pretty shoddy and easy to pick out. Keep an eye out for any game with black contacts or deeply recessed lettering on the back of the cart. And of course, if you see labels that are poorly aligned and/or look like they were printed on an inkjet, that might be a give-away.

A description of what you should look for in pirated games, along with helpful photos, can be found over at 4 color rebellion. With the DS lite getting so popular these days, it’s no doubt we’ll be seeing more of these in the months to come.

DS Lite BlackAn entire shipment of black Nintendo DS Lite units was stolen on the way to the exclusive European release.  The shipment was stolen in Hong Kong and is valued at 2.32 Million dollars.  Officials believe that the units are currently being sold on the black market, and are offering a $128,831 USD reward for information about the heist.  If the missing units were valued at US retail price that would amount to roughly 17,829 missing DS Lite units.  At this point it is unclear what effect this will have on the European launch which is set for June 23rd.

Brain AgeVideo games sales for the month of May fell 10.2%, according to market research group NPD. (Data for May does not include PC game sales.) Nintendo held the top spot in sales with “New Super Mario Bros.” as well as the third spot with its “Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day” title.  Square Enix’s “Kingdom Hearts II” held the second spot. The lag in video game sales is seen as a temporary blimp largely attributed to the fact that consumers are awaiting the debut of new gaming consoles in the fall. In related news, Nintendo has sold a reported 136,000 units of the new DS Lite system in the United States on Sunday and Monday, virtually matching the pace of the original DS unit.

Top Five Game Sales for May

  1. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo)
  2. Kingdom Hearts II (Square Enix)
  3. Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day (Nintendo)
  4. God of War (Sony)
  5. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Take-Two / Bethesda)

Mario Hoops 3 Screenshot

Siliconera has a great article up explaining how the controls will work in the upcoming Nintendo DS title Mario Hoops 3 on 3.  Although I am excited about this game, I hadn’t given much thought to the control scheme it will use.  Mario Hoops 3 on 3 uses the touchpad for dribbling, shooting, and stealing the ball as well as performing character specific special shots.  Hopefully Nintendo has implemented this innovative control scheme in a user-friendly manner, as it is unclear what functions will be assigned to the other buttons.  I can only hope Mario Hoops 3 on 3 will be as good as my favorite 3 on 3 classic Tiny Toon Adventures: Acme All-Stars for the Sega Genesis.

DS LiteAccording to a Reuters report, the Nintendo DS Lite sold 136,500 units in its first two days on sale in the United States, putting it on a pace to match the sales of the original DS launch. More than likely, more units could have sold in the US, given more supply, as many brick-and-mortar retailers are sold out of the console, and a number of online retailers are back ordered as well. The number of sales for the new DS are very strong, considering that this is basically a refined and upgraded version of the regular DS. This is probably due to the rather clunky design of the original, combined with both the looks and improved screen quality of the DS Lite.

DS Lite wrist strapOne of Nintendo DS Lite owner’s biggest complaints has been that the DS Lite does not come with a wrist strap like the original DS did.  The strap was not only useful for quickly grabbing your DS or toting it around, but for writing on the touchscreen as well.  The end of the wrist strap had a small stylus that is perfect for the sliding requirements of many mini games and a convenient way to keep your touchscreen fingerprint free.  Fear not wrist strap lovers, Nintendo sells the strap in the replacement section of their website.  A replacement wrist strap is $3.95 with $2 for shipping.  While it would be great to have it included in the original package, $6 is not too much to get the wrist strap/stylus fix you need.  You can also pick up a replacement battery for $15 or a original rumble pack for $9.99.

Tetris Box The “Touch Generation” titles keep rolling in, with Nintendo announcing new ones at a goodly pace. Nintendo’s master DS games list already counts titles like Magnetica, Big Brain Academy, Brain Age, Nintendogs, True swing Golf, and Tetris DS as currently available. New titles listed as in the pipeline, like the upcoming Sudoku Gridmaster, look to capitalize on current pop culture crazes. With over 250 titles either in release or in the works, there will be no shortage of fun or interesting games to play on your new DS Lite.
